Today, Romare Bearden Park hosts a memorial honoring the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001.
The 9/11 memorial includes 2,977 American flags and pays tribute to Firefighter Steven Coakley, one of the 343 firefighters who perished in service that day.
The event, “Flags of Remembrance,” began at 8:30 a.m., with bell tolls marking the key moments of the attacks. A steel beam from the World Trade Center is on display.
