The City of Belmont just announced three separate incidents of raw sewage discharges into the South Fork River yesterday.
Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Debby overwhelmed the city’s wastewater lift stations, leading to a total of 18,900 gallons of sewage being discharged into the South Fork River.
The South Fork River flows directly into Lake Wylie, raising concerns about potential environmental impacts and swimming safety for the weekend.
According to statements from the city, the 3 specific discharges include:
The discharge at 2021 Oaks Parkway is estimated at approximately 6,525 gallons.
The discharge at 773 Cason St. is estimated at approximately 5,850 gallons.
The discharge at 299 Clay St. is estimated at approximately 6,525 gallons.
