The Charlotte Checkers Were Just Sold To A Florida Company

The Charlotte Checkers have just been sold to a Florida company.

Zawyer Sports and Entertainment announced it has acquired controlling interest in the Charlotte Checkers. The AHL team, the top minor league affiliate of the Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers, made the announcement Monday at Bojangles Coliseum. Michael Kahn, the current CEO and majority owner since 2006, will remain the largest minority partner.

The Charlotte Checkers join Zawyer Sports & Entertainment’s roster, which includes three ECHL franchises: the Jacksonville Icemen, Tahoe Knight Monsters, and the Savannah Ghost Pirates. Additionally, Zawyer owns the Gastonia Baseball Club and operates several other sports properties.

Prominent partners in Zawyer’s group include NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick, Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, NFL linebacker Myles Jack, Carolina Panthers long-snapper J.J. Jansen, and Fox NASCAR analyst Regan Smith.

“We are excited to welcome the Charlotte Checkers to the Zawyer Sports family,” said Zawyer Sports & Entertainment CEO Andy Kaufmann in a press release. “The Checkers are a team rich with history and an incredible fan base and we are honored to do our part in making Checkers Nation proud – not just on game days, but all year long in this very special community. We have already made an impact here in the community with Gastonia Baseball, and we are eager to grow our footprint in the region by providing local families with quality entertainment, community outreach and competitive hockey.”

There will be no change to the Checkers’ NHL affiliation with the Florida Panthers or their status at Bojangles Coliseum. The American Hockey League Board of Governors approved the transaction last week.

The Checkers’ home opener for the 2024-25 season is against the Cleveland Monsters on Friday, Oct. 18, at 7 pm.

Tickets are now on sale now here.
