South Carolina secured its third NCAA women’s basketball championship yesterday afternoon with an impressive 87-75 victory over Iowa.
Led by Tessa Johnson’s 19 points and Kamilla Cardoso’s 15 points, the Gamecocks dominated, denying Iowa their first title hopes.
The game marked the end of Caitlin Clark’s college career, where she set Division I scoring records and announced her WNBA draft entry after scoring 30 points. Despite Iowa knocking out South Carolina last year, the Gamecocks have since gone undefeated, achieving the 10th perfect season in Division I women’s basketball history.

Looking forward, South Carolina faces challenges with key players departing but has promising talent in sophomores like Chloe Kitts, Raven Johnson, and Ashlyn Watkins, along with emerging stars Tessa Johnson and MiLaysia Fulwiley.
Coach Dawn Staley’s leadership has been pivotal, guiding South Carolina through an unbeaten season despite losing all starters. Their potential for sustained success makes their quest for back-to-back unbeaten seasons and the upcoming WNBA season with standout players like Clark and Cardoso worth watching.
