CMPD Teaming Up With Hyundai To Fight A New Surge in Vehicle Thefts

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has just joined forces with automotive giant Hyundai to fight a growing wave of vehicle thefts across our region.

As of last week, CMPD reported a total of 939 auto thefts, with 70% involving Hyundai or Kia models that lack engine immobilizers.

The thefts have increasingly been linked to a viral TikTok trend that challenges teens to steal Kia and Hyundai vehicles using a simple USB cord.

The CMPD/Hyundai security upgrade event will take place at the PNC Music Pavilion from Friday, February 23, to Sunday, with no registration required and each upgrade taking about 30 minutes.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to check if their cars are eligible on CMPD’s website here.
