Charlotte Ranked Among The Top 10 Worst States in America For Bed Bugs

Charlotte has just been ranked the 9th worst city in America for bed bugs, according to a new report from Orkin. This ranking, determined by the number of bed bug treatments conducted between December 1, 2022, and November 30, 2023, positions Charlotte between Indianapolis and Champaign, Illinois. The top three cities plagued by bed bugs are Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia.

In the Carolinas, Greensboro is also on the list, ranked 18th and moving up 25 places from the previous year. Raleigh, on the other hand, has improved slightly, moving from 20th to 24th, while Greenville in South Carolina is ranked 27th.

Bed bugs, which are small, wingless insects that feed on the blood of sleeping humans and animals, are known for their rapid breeding. A female bed bug can lay up to 500 eggs in her lifetime and can survive for months without feeding, waiting for a host to become available.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlight that travel plays a significant role in the spread of bed bugs. Given that Charlotte’s airport is a major travel hub, it could be contributing to the city’s bed bug issue. Although bed bugs are not considered a health hazard, they are a nuisance due to the itchy bites they leave behind.
