A bridge in Charlotte’s University City neighborhood is soon to be named the “Officer Mia Goodwin Bridge” in memory of the late Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer, Mia Goodwin. Tragically, Officer Goodwin lost her life in December 2021 while assisting in the closure of a section of Interstate 85, struck by a truck driver who collided with police vehicles and another tractor-trailer.
During the upcoming dedication ceremony, CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings remarked that the bridge’s renaming ensures that “her legacy will live on forever” every time someone passes by. In the two years since her passing, various events have been held in her honor, and the driver responsible for the accident has been sentenced to 29 months in prison.

The decision to name the bridge in Officer Mia Goodwin’s honor was approved by the Charlotte City Council in September of the prior year, and NCDOT recently gave its final approval. A private dedication ceremony is scheduled for Friday afternoon to commemorate the renaming, symbolizing the lasting impact of Officer Goodwin’s dedicated service to her community.
